From the moment I first stood up on a wave, my life has revolved around surfing. My passion for coaching has grown out of the knowledge and skills I’ve gained both as a competitive surfer and as the caddy for one of the world’s best surfers. Now, my mission is to help all surfers fulfill their potential – combining the art of crafting a surfer’s personal style with the science behind mastering the perfect technique.” – Matt Scorringe.

Why Join this Event?
Has your surfing plateaued? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. It’s a common problem for surfers that have been surfing recreationally for some time. Surfers often develop bad habits they’re not aware of, so they simply make the same mistake over and over again. This camp focuses on finding basic, realistic improvements we can make with your surfing that will help you get to the next level, be a more confident surfer, and start improving. Each of our coaches brings a unique skillset to the group along with years of coaching and competitive surfing experience.
Who Can Go?
This camp is for everyday intermediate surfers who can, at minimum, paddle out and catch waves independently. The surfer should be cutting across the face of the wave most of the time and looking to try or improve basic maneuvers.
This is NOT a high-performance camp, but we use professional coaching methods for everyday surfers to improve and progress towards a higher, stronger, confident level of surfing.
We cap the attendance at 8 surfers to ensure that we aren’t too crowded both in our own group and at any lineup we surf. This maximizes your time and attention with each of our coaches as well.
What’s Included?
Generally, this surf retreat includes accommodations, most meals, local surf guides, and surf coaching with video analysis. We’ll also have some bio-mechanics drills, and skateboarding (Carver) drills. We’ll have 2 full surf sessions per day and daily/nightly video analysis, with daily local surf guide service to surf the best waves each day. The coaching focuses on the identification and discussion of your problem areas, instruction and training methods to correct your surfing technique, and you’ll receive all your video footage taken during the camp. To see a full list of inclusions, scroll past the “instructors” section below and see the bulleted list of what’s included and a daily itinerary.

While traveling the world as a sponsored freesurfer for Billabong, I met and became close friends with former World Surf League surfer Josh Kerr. He offered me the opportunity of a lifetime – to be his personal filmer and caddy on the 2009 World Surf League (WSL) tour. Over that year, I attended all 12 WSL events with Josh. I filmed every surf and heat to analyze where he could improve and help him rise to the top of the World Surf League.
When I returned home at the end of the 2009 season, my world was turned upside down. I was diagnosed with leukaemia and needed extensive chemotherapy for the next two years. At the same time, I studied and learned as much as I could about natural health, nutrition and wellbeing, and went on to win my fight with cancer.
After recovering from my illness, I decided to follow my passion and use my experience and knowledge to coach surfers. From kids to adults, all surfers share the same desire to ride a wave better. At The Art of Surfing (TAOS), we recognize the growing demand for expert-level surf coaching and training among not just elite surfers, but also recreational surfers who typically just want to be able to generate more speed and do a nice top turn.
‘In 2013, I developed The Art of Surfing as a way of passing on my skills to the next generation of aspiring New Zealand surfers.’
Once you’ve learned the basics of surfing, it’s easy to stop progressing. Without knowing what you’re doing wrong or how to improve, you can spend years surfing at the same level. That’s where we come in. No matter where you’re at with your surfing, our finely-tuned video analysis will quickly pinpoint ways to improve your technique, and our professional training methods will eliminate those niggling performance flaws.
TAOS offers high-performance, personalized surf coaching for all abilities. We specialize in technique, video analysis, equipment and competition-based fundamentals. Not only have we developed the programs you need to fulfill your potential, but we’ll customize them to help you achieve your particular surfing goals and budget.
Our programs are offered worldwide, from New Zealand to Bali and beyond. With courses, camps and online coaching, we reach surfers all over the globe.

This space gave me the opportunity to live in front of the beach where I would spend most of my days surfing at the beach. Back in those days, Restaurante Erika was basically the only place to eat and drink at night and it became the local hub for local and international surfers visiting here.
My biggest inspirations were local “old-school” surfers like “El Papaya”, “El Pupa” and Jimmy Rotterham who by that time were considered as some of the most accomplished surfers in the area. I even had the amazing opportunity to surf with legends like Andy Irons, Josh Kerr on their trips to El Salvador and also meet many international athletes in the surfing world while travelling abroad. I used to participate in national and international competitions. But after a couple of years of doing the “Bamba Show” I was lucky enough to be selected and trained as a judge for surfing contests. Now I’m mainly focused on raising my family and helping other surf enthusiasts perfect their technique with my own Surf Academy.

Surf Coaching
Matt Scorringe & The Art of Surfing
Matt's surf coaching at TAOS is one of the best in the world; Matt has an uncanny ability to observe, recognize, and deliver the key coaching technique you need for your next surf session. He focuses on precisely what you need, and nothing more. His coaching program highlights the fundamentals of solid surfing and his delivery makes it accessible for you - the every day surfer. Although Matt is a former professional surfer, this is not a high performance camp, these camps are focused entirely on helping the average surfer surf better and have more fun in the water.
Surf Coaching
Video Analysis Each Day
Daily video analysis is a key component of every TAOS surf camp that we lead at Balancé. We'll have 1-2 video analysis sessions each day highlighting each surfer's focus area. Matt's approach uses a slick video tool where he can highlight and zoom in on you and markup to show you the key adjustments or positioning you need to work on.
